The Pass Plus Scheme is a further training course specifically aimed at new drivers who have recently passed their driving test although anyone who holds a full UK licence is eligible to take part in the scheme.
It has been devised by the DSA in conjunction with insurance companies and driving instructors and its aim is to increase road safety through a course of 6 practical modules which will increase the depth of your driving expertise.
Statistically new drivers are most likely to be involved in an accident in the first 2 years of passing their test.
The course consists of a minimum 6 hours tuition which will include driving:
All of these will increase your driving skills and confidence on the roads.
You will be constantly assessed during your course and must successfully complete each module to a designated standard. (There is no test at the end of the course).
A number of major insurance companies are participating in the scheme and offer a discount to drivers who have successfully completed the Pass Plus course. A list of these companies will be provided to you through your driving instructor. Other companies not listed may also offer discounts for successful Pass Plus participants.
How much does Pass Plus cost? The fee for the Pass Plus course is £150. However, Shropshire County Council is currently running a scheme whereby they are subsidising Shropshire residents who wish to participate in the Pass Plus scheme (Conditions apply). Initially they are offering a discount of £30, but this figure may vary subject to available funds. This discount would be offset against the cost of the course thereby potentially bringing the cost to you down to £120. You should bear in mind that the course will take a minimum of six hours, if more sessions are needed for you to successfully complete the course, this may add to the cost.
